Domain names
Once you have decided that you need a website, the next step is to register a domain name. Even if you don't plan to get started on your website for a while, registering a domain name now will save disappointment later when your prefered name is no longer available - At klixo we have seen this happen many times! Registering a domain name is quick, easy and inexpensive so there is no excuse for not doing it right now!
How it works
In a nutshell: You can only register a domain name if no-one else has already registered it.
You register a domain name with a registrar. The registrar simply keeps a record of the fact that the name belongs to you, just like holding a title to a section of land.
Many companies act as registrars, they are authorised by a domain name authority to act on their behalf.
When you register a domain name with a registrar they will charge you a fee to register the domain name for one year. on every anniversary of registering your domain name, the registrar will charge you a fee to register your domain name for one more year. a registrar may charge you whatever they like to register a domain name for a year, but typically it is around the NZ$40.00 + GST mark.
You do not have to have a website to register a domain name. Good registrars will "park" the domain name for you for free until your website is up and running. Once your website is ready to go you can "point" the domain name at your new website. A good registrar will not charge you to "point" your domain name at your website.
