"B" (White) Listings
B Listings are used for organisations that have a logo but not an advertiser details page. A listing will appear as a B listing when both of these conditions are true:
- The "Customer Logo" field is set
- The "Story Body" HTML field is empty
Map Link
A Map link will be shown in a B listing when either of these conditions is true:
- The "Address 1" and "Address 3" fields are both set
- The "GMap Link" field is set
Because B listings do not have their own Advertiser page, these links will always link to a page on Google Maps (in a new window) that displays a map of the address.
Map Link uses Address 1 and Address 3
If the Address 1 and Address 3 fields are set, the link to Google maps will be derived from the Address data. This means that a search query string is passed to Google Maps that Google then uses to "Geocode" the address on the fly. Of course problems can arise if Google does not recognise the Address. A classic example of this is with the "Avenues" in Tauranga, which everyone knows as 11th Ave, 15th Ave and so on, but the official name of "11th Ave" is actually "Eleventh Ave", so Google does not recognise it.
Address 2 is not passed to Google for Geocoding, so it can be used for non-address information that Google would not recognise like "Walter House".
If the Map link is not working, and changing the data in the Address 1 and Address 3 fields is not possible or practical, you will need to use the "GMap Link" field.
Map Link using "GMap Link" field
If the "GMap Link" field is set, the Map link will link to whatever value set in this field, overiding any values that are set in the Address 1 and Address 3 fields. This feature is provided to overide addresses that are not supported by Google, like "14th Ave, Tauranga" or "Historic Village" for example.
Find an address in Google Maps, copy the link and paste into the Story Custom Field in Klixo
- In a new browser window, open http://maps.google.co.nz/. NB: ensure this is .co.nz, not .com
-
Search the map for the address including the town and the country, e.g. "23 Thirteenth Ave, Tauranga, NZ"
- If Google cannot find the address, modify your search
- When Google has successfully located the address (indicated with a Green arrow), click "Link to this page"
- An orange box will appear with two fields. Click in the field captioned "Paste link in email or IM". The text will be highlighted (dark blue)
- Copy the link (to the clipboard)
- Switch to the Klixo Story Editor and Paste the value into the "GMap Link" field
- Save the Story
Placing Locations on 'My Maps'
Google Maps allow you to create a map of your own to plot points that may not already be plotted on a map. For example, 'Tauranga Memorial Park' or other locations that don't have a specific street address.
To begin, make sure you have a Google.com account.
- Log in to Google.com using your login details.
- Once logged in, click on the 'Maps' link at the top of your screen, to the right. This will take you to Google Maps.
- Click on the 'My Maps' tab underneath the Google Maps search box.
- On the left hand side there is a menu underneath the My Maps tab. You have two choices here: 'Create new map' or, if you have already created a map, select one of your existing maps below. There is an article on how to create a new map below.
- Click on the title of the map you would like to use. This will load the details of your map below the maps list. These details include the title, the description and any locations that have been added to the map (if any).
- Click on the 'Edit' button next to the title of the map you are editing. This will display buttons on the map on the right hand side.
- To create a new location click on this button: This will change your mouse cursor into a blue location marker that looks similar to the button.
- Click on the location you wish you create, this will drop the 'marker'. You can move the marker by clicking and 'dragging' the marker to the correct location.
- Once you are satisfied with the location, enter the title of the location.
- Once you are satisfied with the title, enter the description (try using keywords in your description for better results)
- Once satisfied with the description click 'OK'.
- You have now created a location. If you have chosen to make your map 'public', other people will be able to search for your newly-added location through Google Maps.
You can now link to this location in your customer listing by referring to the "Map Link using "GMap Link" field" story above.
